Jordan stepped into the shuttle bay and threw the light switch. The lights sprung to life with a distinct hum. The shuttle bay always smelled like grease and oil. She made her way over to the Crash Wagon’s shuttle and keyed in a code on its doors that would allow her access. The key panel made a beep, which indicated the code she used was accepted. The doors opened.
Jordan was surprised to see Vesh on the other side. Before she could ask why he wasn’t on the bridge, he drove his left foot into her gut, knocking her backwards. Her mobile comm fell from her grasp.
She managed to catch her breath around the same time she felt adrenaline rush through her body, anticipating the fight. The trick was controlling the adrenaline. Not letting it overtake you.
Vesh stepped out of the shuttle and walked toward her. He had a stunner in his right hand. She’d need to try to avoid that.
“What are you doing!”
“My job.”
He lunged at her with the stunner. She dropped to her back and kicked both feet into his stomach, forcing him backwards. This gave her the time she needed to get to her feet and into a defensive stance.
He was faster than she thought, though. He recovered and thrust the stunner at her again. Jordan deflected his right arm and landed a blow to his nose with her right fist. She knew from the sound that she had broken it. Vesh dropped the stunner and clapped his hands to his face.
Jordan bent down to pick it up, but he grabbed a handful of her hair, drove his left knee into her gut, forcing the wind from her lungs. He yanked her backwards by her hair and threw her down, slamming her head against the steel deck.
Her head rang and tunnel vision was setting in. Vesh was probably going for the stunner. There wasn’t a lot of time. She had to get up. As she did, his hand closed around her throat. He drove her head back down hard against the deck.
She felt the cold metal tip of the stunner press against her chest. In the instant before it was activated, all Jordan could think of was how Brett had apparently never got around to explaining his ‘crew is family’ concept to Vesh.
Then…blackness.
